{"id":436,"date":"2024-07-02T01:39:18","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T01:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/?page_id=436"},"modified":"2024-07-02T07:22:35","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T07:22:35","slug":"tribute-to-a-pioneer","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/index.php\/tribute-to-a-pioneer\/","title":{"rendered":"Tribute to a Pioneer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"557\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2006-Reg-McCallum-cropped2-557x1024.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-468\" style=\"width:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2006-Reg-McCallum-cropped2-557x1024.webp 557w, https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2006-Reg-McCallum-cropped2-163x300.webp 163w, https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2006-Reg-McCallum-cropped2-768x1411.webp 768w, https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2006-Reg-McCallum-cropped2-836x1536.webp 836w, https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2006-Reg-McCallum-cropped2-jpg.webp 1110w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Reg McCallum and his friend Kevin Allery, were pioneers in the development of Rail Trails in Queensland, opening the first rail trail in Queensland over the Blackbutt Range from Linville to Blackbutt at Linville on 2 June 2006.\u00a0 In November Reg accepted a Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation Achievement Award for their efforts (right).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 22 January 2007 the Deputy Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh, announced immediate government funding for three rail trails in Queensland.\u00a0 This concept was developed from the Regional Trails Strategy prepared as a partnership between State and local governments and the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation: Reg and Kevin were both Nanango councillors at this time and had won a QORF award two months before the announcement.\u00a0 Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the trails to be funded immediately was the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail that involved, \u201cconverting the disused Brisbane Valley Railway into a 140-kilometre recreational trail from Ipswich to Blackbutt\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"436\" height=\"803\" src=\"https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Reg-McCallum-On-the-Trail-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-472\" style=\"width:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Reg-McCallum-On-the-Trail-jpg.webp 436w, https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Reg-McCallum-On-the-Trail-163x300.webp 163w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Reg McCallum on the trail, 2010.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This trail has now been extended from Ipswich to the railway terminus at Yarraman with additional support from the South Burnett and Toowoomba regional councils but the whole trail had not been completed by June, 2017.&nbsp; A 30k section within the Somerset region between Toogoolawah on the Brisbane Valley Highway and Moore on the D\u2019Aguilar Highway remains undeveloped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reg McCallum served on the advisory committee for the rail trail\u2019s development and was the inaugural chair of the Ambassadors of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail who maintain the trail in the South Burnett region on behalf of the regional council.&nbsp; Over the last ten years Reg offered his considerable talents to the many large groups who now regularly use the BVRT for their annual events. His memory of the region over the last 90 years also served as the stimulus for most of the original interpretive signage along the trail.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tour-Linville-to-Blackbutt-2004-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tour-Linville-to-Blackbutt-2004-jpg.webp 373w, https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tour-Linville-to-Blackbutt-2004-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/brisbanevalleyheritagetrails.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tour-Linville-to-Blackbutt-2004-299x225.webp 299w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kevin Allery, centre, Linville Station \u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Reg presented himself, with some authenticity, as the \u201cBattling Bushie\u201d or perhaps a horseman of considerable repute depending on his audience.&nbsp; Only once in living memory, as far as we can discover, did he wear his Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for visiting royalty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reg McCallum was a Life Member of Brisbane Valley Heritage Trails and we were privileged to work with him.&nbsp; Sadly he died in 2024.
